🏛️Did you know we are the ✨only✨ museum in North America devoted to the history of surgery? And we're also so much more! This year, the museum mansion has housed an incredible 5 art exhibits, 1 traveling exhibit, over 15 cultural events, 1 gala, and that's not even close to everything.

We couldn't do all this alone. Our work is heavily supported by donations which allow us to preserve historical artifacts such as ancient trephining skulls from Peru and an Austrian amputation saw from the 1500, and ✨also✨ bring you educational and art programming that highlights local Chicagoans.

At our Museum, we spend a lot of time thinking about all of the amazing things the body can do. And while our primary way of honoring the things the body can do is through our collection, another way that we appreciate the body and its mechanics is through hosting performances.

Performance - whether musical, theatrical, or other - is a highly physical act that engages the mind and the muscles, bringing together an audience for an artistic moment of community. From virtuosic performances to performances that directly engage ideas around health and human performance we at IMSS are grateful to be able to expand conversations had around health in this perhaps unexpected way and are so appreciative to the folks who have brought our spaces alive with movement and sound. We are also grateful to all of you who attend our programs and make it possible for us to continue to offer these conversations.

🍯 Did you know that the symptoms of diabetes were recorded as early as the 5th Century BC?

Indian surgeon Sushruta, who authored "Sushruta Samhita" which is considered to be one of the most important surviving early medical treatise and foundational text of Ayurveda, described the urine of patients using the term: madhumeha (honey-like urine). The description came from Sushruta's observations that the urine of people with diabetes had not only a sweet taste but a tendency to attract ants! 🐜

IMSS is proud to partner with @visual_aids for Day With(out) Art 2024 by presenting "Red Reminds Me...", a program of seven videos reflecting the emotional spectrum of living with HIV today.

We will be screening the film on December 1st, starting at 6:30pm and joined by folks from Hope For The Day and the Health Resources & Services Administration. The event is free, RSVP preferred!

The program features new work by Gian Cruz, Milko Delgado, Imani Harrington, David Oscar Harvey, Mariana Iacono and Juan De La Mar, Nixie, and Vasilios Papapitsios,

A day of mourning and action that uses art to respond to the ongoing HIV and AIDS crisis, Day With(out) Art encourages museums, universities, museums, and art institutions to present related programming on or around December 1, World AIDS Day. Because AIDS is not over!

🗣 Nelly Agassi dives into her site-specific body of work in this artist talk on Nov 20th from 6-8pm.

Insomnia, is a multi-part exhibit with both large scale and intimate works across the museum.

Drawing on a technique she calls "biography of the site" Agassi developed a personal relationship with the past, present, and future history of the museum in connection to her own.
