"The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp" (1632) by Rembrandt, a copy of which is displayed at IMSS, depicts the dissection of Aris Kindt, a recently executed thief, during a public lecture on human anatomy by Amsterdam's Guild of Surgeons, dated January 31, 1632.

In the 17th Century, anatomy lectures like these were hot social affairs, attended not only by doctors and medical students but also members of the general public!

Misplaced science is prevalent throughout medical history, and violet rays are just one example.

Thought to treat a wide variety of ailments, these rays released UV radiation and large quantities of ozone. In the first half of the twentieth century, violet ray devices were advertised as beneficial for health and beauty, until the FDA banned their manufacturers in 1951 for making false claims about the rays' healing properties.

She directs Walden [verb], an experimental adaption of 'Walden' by Henry David Thoreau. The mixed-media show is a 3-channel video installation consisting of art made by members of the cast and crew and explores themes of environmentalism and human discord.

90 years ago today, Marie Curie, the first woman t

90 years ago today, Marie Curie, the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and the first person to win two Nobel Prizes, passed away. Curie is known for her research on radioactivity and the co-discovery of two chemical elements, polonium and radium, with her husband Pierre.

Her work made possible many of the major medical diagnostic techniques still used today, and her legacy lives on at IMSS, where she stands in our Hall of Immortals.

Learning about the history of prosthetic eyes while visiting our permanent collection is super cool, but needing to get a prosthetic eye after a fireworks mishap is not. As Jeff Todd, the president and CEO of Prevent Blindness, said, "Leave the fireworks to the professionals, and remember to stay vigilant, even during authorized fireworks displays."
